The Lafferty Racing Team

Paul Lafferty
Paul LaffertyTrainer
Paul Lafferty runs a Group 1 winning yard at the magnificent Summerveld Training Centre in KwaZulu-Natal. He likes to travel in search of the best racing opportunities, with the strong belief that placing horses in the right races is a key component of running a successful yard. He has trained Graded winners in all four major provinces, including Gr1 winner Harry’s Son, the Equus 2YO Champion Colt of the 2013/2014 racing season. Paul’s consistent success during a training career that spans a quarter of a century is testament to both his eye and training prowess. The stable’s ongoing, focused aim is to campaign horses successfully locally and internationally.

Dave Byrnes
Dave ByrnesAssistant Trainer
After serving his jockey apprenticeship successfully in South Africa, Dave Byrnes moved across to the USA in 1979. And later that year, Dave joined the then fledgling young trainer, Roy Waugh, as stable jockey based in San Francisco where Roy had a second string for the powerful international Summa Stable, owned by Bruce McNall and later in partnership with Texan oil man, Nelson Bunker Hunt. In early 1980, Roy moved his small string of fifteen horses across to Delaware Park on the East Coast to take advantage of the increased number of turf races offered on the Eastern seaboard racing circuit, covering the states of Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania & New York from his base in Delaware. Dave summarily ruffled a few feathers booting home 11 winners from their first seventeen starters at Delaware Park. When Roy returned to California in 1983, Dave elected to remain on the East Coast to ride mostly the Maryland circuit, and was leading rider for several years until an untimely racing accident curtailed his riding career in 1987. Dave now assists Paul with his Summerveld yard
